Kansas Counties Receive Assistance Due to High Foreclosure Filings
Counties in Kansas are finding an increase in foreclosures that were filed, but a decrease in those that were actually foreclosed. In Reno County the foreclosure suits that were filed in 2006 and 2007 were combined and qualified the county for federal assistance. They will receive funds through the Housing and Economy Recovery Act.
Reno County ended up with the eighth highest amount of foreclosures in the state. Butler County had the seventh highest amount of foreclosures in the state with Miami County in ninth. There was a large space in the amount of foreclosures between 8th and 9th place counties.
In 2006 there were 255 foreclosures in Reno County and there were less than 250 foreclosures in 2007. In 2008 there were 230 foreclosures. Reno County had a 10 percent drop in two years, but they still managed to qualify for assistance since their foreclosure filings were higher. There were 40 percent of the foreclosure filing that ended up cancelled due to the lenders and borrowers managed to work out a modification or a repayment plan or the homeowner managed to sell or catch up with their payments. There were more than 120 properties that went into auction while more than 30 properties in foreclosure are still pending as of last month.
