Mosquito Infestations Effect Neighbors of Foreclosed Homes
Mosquitoes continue to be a problem where there are large numbers of foreclosures. Foreclosed homes with pools have caused a big problem with mosquitoes flying around biting many of the people in the neighborhood. The big problem here is not the bites, but the diseases the mosquitoes carry. If the pools were cleaned out after a storm then this would not be as big of a problem.
In Phoenix, Arizona there were 6,000 pools that needed to be cleaned out in 2007 and in 2008 this number increased to 9,000. It is expected to increase to 14,000. The more homeowners who lose their homes to foreclosure and have pools in their backyards will need someone to come out and empty the pool throughout the year. Even though these pools were probably empties before the borrowers left due to foreclosure, after several rains the pools filled up quickly and caused a major problem with algae odors and mosquitoes.
In New Orleans, Louisiana there were more than 360 pools cleaned, but there were more than 200 complaints concerning infestations of mosquitoes in the area in the month of March. It seems the more pools that are cleaned out each month even more need to be worked on for the following month due to the foreclosure rate climbing.
