California Has Increasing Problems With Renters In Foreclosed Properties
California has not only experienced one of the highest numbers of foreclosures but they are now experiencing a high volume of renters being booted out of a home they were renting since the landlord foreclosed. California has a statewide organization that stands up for renters rights. They are fighting to keep renters in these homes at least long enough to be able to find another place to live. They also would prefer the expense of moving to be covered as well since they already put out money to a landlord that knew they would lose the property.
At least one third of residential units in California are in foreclosure. Part of the cause of the foreclosures is that these owners of rental units are unable to get help since the property is considered an investment. Therefore, the renter loses out. More than half of the properties are listed as owner occupied and the owner is still unable to receive help since they would have to reveal that they don’t really live there.
Banks continue to boot renters out without much warning. The renter’s rights program also desires to eliminate this problem. Where are these renters supposed to go and where can they take their belongings in such a short time? Some end up living on the beach in a tent until they can find a place to live. Some people also end up living in their car. However, it costs money to move furniture and other personal belongings and in most cases the renter doesn’t have it. With organizations supporting renters they will be able to get help to move to another place without having to put the money out. California is a state that is infested with renters. Much of the properties were bought for investment purposes.
