One Year Moratorium for Homeowners Facing Foreclosure

In Baltimore, Maryland they are trying to get a one year moratorium passed for all foreclosures. There has been an increase of foreclosures in Baltimore that has many homeowners and renters concerned. Many renters and homeowners appeared in front of the city council to plead their case in why a year moratorium would be effective. However, due to three councilmen being absent there was no vote casted.

The real estate and lending industry feel that if a one year moratorium bill was passed it would ruin the loaning system. No banks would be lending to potential buyers and it would overall be a bad effect on the housing and lending market.

Renters are concerned about put out on the streets within a one day period and an increasing amount of empty homes are destroying neighborhoods as they continue to be vandalized. With a one year moratorium the Baltimore residents feel that it would give enough time for homeowners to be able to work out a modified loan while renters can comfortably stay in the homes they are renting. Many feel this bill would be just buying time while others fear that the banks will turn around and try to sue the city for passing such a bill.
